About N.R.S. Medical College

N.R.S. Medical College, established in 1873 as the Calcutta Medical College, is one of the oldest and most prestigious medical institutions in India. Located in the heart of Kolkata, West Bengal, the college has been a pioneer in medical education and healthcare services in Eastern India for over a century and a half.

The institution was renamed in 1948 in honor of Nil Ratan Sircar, a distinguished physician and philanthropist. Today, N.R.S. Medical College operates a 1250-bed tertiary care teaching hospital that serves as a referral center for the entire region, providing comprehensive medical care to millions of patients annually.

Our college is affiliated with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences and is recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC). We offer undergraduate (MBBS), postgraduate (MD/MS), diploma, and super-specialty courses across various medical disciplines.

Our 1250-bed teaching hospital is one of the largest tertiary care facilities in Eastern India, serving as a referral center for complex medical cases from West Bengal and neighboring states.

The hospital operates round the clock with emergency services in all major specialties. We handle approximately 1.5 million outpatient visits and 85,000 inpatient admissions annually. Our emergency department is one of the busiest in the region, managing trauma, cardiac emergencies, stroke, and other critical conditions.

Tropical Disease Research Unit

Our unit focuses on malaria, dengue, tuberculosis, and other infectious diseases prevalent in Eastern India. Recent ICMR-funded project on drug-resistant malaria has shown promising results.
